Internet Home-base Biz Tips for a Potential Start-up
Filed under Small Business / WFH, Small Office StartupFeb 4
The beauty of the Internet is that we can use it for whatever reason, and for all seasons. As for business, we don’t need to wait for customers or clients to come to us. Websites are open to visit all the time, anytime.
For actual transaction, limit’s extent is only the time zones or when we are away from the computer. But the site of any business entity is something available 24-hour day. It’s an email away to the website owner or the webmaster. It’s so unlike the shop on the corner of our suburb which opens from 9am and closes at 5pm, well, perhaps until 9 in the evening during late shopping nights.
Yesterday, I got a call from a friend who is seriously considering to start a website, say a blog, with end in mind to put up a home based internet business. Yes, briefly, I told her to ensure she has a good-running computer system and basic requirement tips. Naturally, the words Google, Microsoft, search engine, blogging, spam, security, FireFox, are never far behind. And because I have been a satisfied user of WordPress through the years, it’s always in the list of my initial discussion with friends as regards setting up a simple web site.
I told her to search this site as I’ve already posted some tips. As to my mention of Internet or cyber terms, I often go easy on them. Let’s face it, we almost always fall back to where we’ve been comfortable and supported best, be it search engines, service providers, browsers, and so forth.
So many things to discuss, but I only had few hours to entertain my friend’s queries as I have few writing deadlines to beat. She understood. She is still concern about all the disturbing happenings online in terms of security. I’ve decided to stick to the benefits of the Internet for her potential business, such as:
- Internet saves cost of place and staff
- Internet gives a more efficient communications
- Internet is an all day salesperson, therefore saves time and physical effort
The Net works, even we we are not at work.

Here’s a simple quiz to test readiness in starting a home business
The lure of working from home, no traffic jams to contend with, owning our own time, and so forth, can be so tempting. It seems so easy. But is it? Here is a simple quiz you can try for your business personality.
Working from home can be so tempting. There are no traffic jams to contend with, we can own our time, and so forth. Sure, it seems so easy. But is it? Here is a simple quiz you can try for your business personality, with 15 statements. Find out how you go. It was passed on to me by a friend some time ago, and leaves me without a specific point system to offer. However, I’ve come up with a high-level rating to drive home a point.
I’ve scaled it from 1-5. Rate yourself on each statement, which means five (’5′) will apply to your best and one (’1′) will be your lowest. Assume that all statements apply, and therefore you shouldn’t give any “Not Applicable” answers. Above all, be honest with yourself, enjoy, and take the quiz in good spirit.

Reading a Business Book
After romance and spirituality, another popular book category is business. It’s enough that we have to contend with the Internet overload, add to it, some of us are also drowning with this business stuff.
Well, there are two things we can do, that is, ways to get the most out of the weight of business books from the shelves:
- Keep to the key or central Idea. To be able to get value out of a business book, we need to understand what the central idea is, then we can determine under which conditions it is good or not. If it’s ok, we keep the idea and do something about it. If not, then we can simply disregard it.
- Take it with a grain of salt. Business books are all about generalizations, which means that no one strategy to marketing and selling, no matter how brilliantly panned out, can be an exact match. Just because it worked for Microsoft doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for IBM or Apple, for Google or Yahoo.

From education, experience, and years of research about the online learning methods of Internet marketers, I have found tremendous amount of information, most of which are reasonably effective as learning aids.
Briefly, I can say that not all online learning involve high-speed, interactive discussion groups, videos and audios. There is so much to learn from the overflow of materials.
My one suggestion for anyone interested in Internet marketing, or if you want to find out how others are approaching the matter, is to research, research and research. Join some related to your interest forums. Look for few good and relevant ebooks (many of them are free to download), and find out what you want to know.
Why am I stressing this? Because I’ve been burnt few times in the past years, plus wasted effort, and yes, hard-earned monies thrown away.
It’s worth your while to find time to research, and network to get good feedback from competent Internet gurus.

Since its advent, Google has surpassed mere popularity as it has become an internet “untouchable” in itself. After rubbing each other off at Stanford University, two PhD students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, found a path through the doors of the World Wide Web leading to a much better way of searching for relevant information.
Google Sergey Brin and Larry Page
When Sergey Brin came together with Larry Page in 1995 it was a clash of minds, rather than a meeting. Both of them were computer science graduates. Page had recently arrived at Stanford University to begin his PhD, and Brin, also studying for a PhD, was given the assignment of showing the newcomer Page around. At first, the two didn’t hit it off, and as often written about them, it’s been said that they argued and disagreed with each other almost all the time.

What About e-Mail?
Nowadays, everybody has email pretty much attached to his or her online identity. The e-mail or electronic mail has become our basic online activity operation, similar to the postal mail or what we now commonly call the “snail mail.”
One thing nice with the email is that if we are the receiver, we don’t have to be online to receive it. But once we hook up to the network we can easily retrieve any email sent to us, at our convenience.
The email started as a simple text – just words and paragraphs. Today, as Internet technology has gone and long way, we now talk of “attachment files” — and not just text files, but all other forms such as images, programs, sounds, etc. which sometimes, may need to be deciphered to be useable. A kind of software might be needed to do the job. Nowadays, many of these softwares are pre-installed when we purchase a new computer.
For the future business owner who is not computer savvy, an e-mail always consists of two parts – separated by an “@” sign, pronounced as “at.”
First part – is the individual or person’s log-in ID
Second Part – indicates the Internet service or company through which we are connecting to the Internet.
For example,
Alex Thomas, a staff of Abracadabra Company, might be reachable online by her email
alexandra.thomas@abracadabra.com
First part is ‘alexandra.thomas’
Second part is ‘abracadabra.com’
There are more variations to this simple email address, like alexthomas@abracadabra.net or thomasalex@abracadabra.org
But enough said about the email.
Generally, a small business owner has a different business email address from a personal one.
The email is a very important basic Internet fixture for many years already. It is universal, and unlike the snail mail, it comes to us instantly, in a flash!
Ok, I got carried away a bit, but I’m sure I’ve made my friend’s older uncle happy for this mention. He wants to have his own e-mail as soon as possible. Two, business and personal.

Internet Browsers in the WWW
Filed under Trivia & QuotesNov 10
This post is dedicated to the not-so-Internet-savvy.
For us to be able to view information on the Web, we use a special kind of software we call a browser. The two most popular browsers are Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, but many more are available, including those that specialize in other media in pictures and sound files.
Although browsers are primarily intended to access the World Wide Web, they can also be used to access information provided by Web servers in private networks and file systems.
Other major browsers joining Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are Apple Safari, and Opera for Windows; Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Opera for Macintosh systems.
Google Chrome was originally released for Windows, and for Macintosh in the fall. Already, it is touted as an alternative browser for the other major players.
What do the Internet browsers do? They are so constructed and designed that they can translate the coded information placed on the Internet, producing an image copy on screen. It could vary in fonts and formats, but pretty much captures the information for us.

Uniform Resource Locator or URL
Filed under Trivia & QuotesNov 10Note: This post is for the not-computer-savvy. Thanks.
Through the amazing world wide web (www) – thanks mainly to Tim Berners-Lee – the world’s communication system has never been that efficient as it enables limitless amounts of information to be used and searched anywhere we are in the global network.
Ever heard of information overload? Oh yes, so many of us have been victimized, and we do need to manage this. It can be overwhelming, indeed.
But in contrast to the information a book can give us, the web has no beginning, middle or end. It is endless, non-sequential. With the use of a hypertext or a link to a particular locator, which we call the URL, we can easily arrive to the internet location or website we want, directing us to what we are searching for. We use the jargon “surfing” the internet” whilst searching for information.
The World Wide Web, WWW or just the ‘Web’ has its own accepted address, just like our own home address. The Web’s address is called the URL which stands for Uniform Resource Locator. As I earlier mentioned in the use of the hypertext, through the URL, we an go directly to a particular Web site of our needs or wants.
A URL example is http://inspiredpen.info
It should be noted that some URLs can still get us to the Web site even without the ‘www’ suffixed.
Until later.
